Singing Bowls - How to Use a Bowl in Meditation and Relaxation

 

Singing Bowls is one of the most unique sounds in the world. They have been around for thousands of years and have been used as a form of entertainment in many different cultures. Their origins are probably linked to early Chinese culture, although there is no evidence to suggest this. Nowadays they are commonly used as a musical instrument, in parades and gatherings, or simply as a decorative item in homes around the world.

 

In Chinese culture, Singing Bowls is either hanging from strings to create a serene, soothing sound, or placed on a flat surface to produce a beating rhythmical effect. A standing bowl or resting bell is simply an inverted bell, held from below by the rim. These bowls are typically quite tall, and come in a range of diameters, from a couple of metres to a meter in diameter. They are often painted with motifs, flowers, and other colours to make them more attractive and pleasing to the eye. As a musical instrument they produce relaxing sounds that can be played individually or together in a group, creating an experience of peace and tranquility.

This will help to make the sound of the water pouring onto the bowl's surface deeper and more soothing. Similarly, you could fill the bowl with some sand or rocks and use this instead of water to make a sand storm. This can create an ocean-like ambience, complete with waves crashing onto the shore and the faint echo of the sea through the surroundings. In fact, you could even use Tibetan singing bowls as the base for your own meditation session. Perhaps you already own a few instruments, such as strings, a guitar and a harmonica. Why not turn these into your own sound sources? Place them around the room and sing out loud! As you relax and listen to the sound of your instruments, you'll begin to associate this sound with the sound of nature and the power of its elements. As your body attains a balance with nature, you'll find that you have greater control over your thoughts, feelings and emotions - leading to an enhanced sense of well-being.
